The Story Behind the Design

The Story:

More than just footwear, the Slip 1 “What’s Up?” was created as a tool for connection and communication. Designed to spark conversation, these sneakers are an invitation to acknowledge one another — whether friends, family, or strangers passing by on the street.

For founder and designer Haruko Mori, sneakers have always represented a form of self-expression and human connection. Much like offering flowers as a gesture of greeting, the Slip 1 acts as a modern introduction — a simple way to say, “Hey, what’s up?”

Created to inspire a sense of community, the design celebrates the small yet meaningful moments we share with others around the world. The playful “Happy” and “Sad” faces placed on the heel reflect the emotions we carry through everyday life, encouraging empathy, conversation, and connection.

Inspiration behind Slip 1 “What’s Up?”:

“Sneakers are communication tools with strangers for me. When you walk down the street wearing your favorite shoes, people naturally compliment them and conversations begin. And when you wear something you truly love, it uplifts your mood throughout the day.

Color Selection:

For the Slip 1 “What’s Up?”, Haruko envisioned a bold and joyful palette inspired by the excitement of choosing flavors at a favorite ice cream shop. The combination of vibrant, expressive colors was carefully selected to feel playful, uplifting, and impossible to ignore — designed to stand out while bringing energy and optimism into everyday life.

Material Selection:

Each material used in the Slip 1 “What’s Up?” was carefully selected by Haruko for both style and comfort. From texture to finish, every detail was thoughtfully considered to create a sneaker that feels lightweight, breathable, flexible, and comfortable for everyday wear — while maintaining its bold visual identity.
